Drake Duck

Scientific name; Aythya fuligula 

Status; breeds in UK (breeds at Enton) but numbers greatly increased in winter by migrants from Iceland and northern Europe. Sometimes forms large flocks. 

Feeding; feeds by diving, usually to bottom of lake; omnivorous.


Drake Shoveler

Scientific name; Anas clyptea 

Status; breeds in UK and numbers greatly increased in winter by migrants from Iceland and from north and central Europe 

Feeding: omnivorous, including small molluscs, insects and seed.  Feeds when swimming with head and neck immersed, by upending and occasionally by diving


Drake Gadwall

Scientific name: Anas strepera 

Status; breeds in UK in increasing numbers and a winter visitor to lakes from Iceland and central Europe 

Feeding: feeds on vegetative parts of plants while swimming with head under water or by upending

 


Meadow Pipit

Scientific name: Anthus patensis 

Status: commonest pipit in Western Europe, breeding on ground in open vegetation in a wide range of climate zones.  Numbers augmented in winter by migrants, probably from Iceland and Northern Europe. 

Feeding: feeds on ground, mainly on invertebrates but also seeds in autumn and winter.
